As the World Federation of Roller Skating, Mountain Dew and Adventure Sports Network Group cooperate with each other, “The Surf Tour” held during June 13th and 16th on the Long Beach in California will be the first official global Olympic qualification for men's and women's skateboarding bowl and street style events in the United States in 2019 and final qualifying in the United States in 2020. Skateboarding will be included for the first time in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has been proposed as an additional sport for the 2024 Paris games
More than 300 of the world's top men's and women's skateboarders will compete in individual bowl and street style competitions to compete for Champion title of The Surf Tour and earn valuable points for their national/regional Olympic skateboarding teams. As it used to be, the riders on The Surf Tour are the best in each sport domain. This year's expected roster includes members of the U.S. national skateboard team, such as Nyjah Huston, Jagger Eaton, Tristan Rennie, Mariah Duran, Lacey Baker, Jordyn
Barratt, and international skaters such as Oskar Rozenberg (Sweden), Kelvin Hoefler (Brazil), Pamela Rosa (Brazil), Yuto Horigome (Japan), Leticia Bufoni (Brazil) and Ryan Decenzo (Canada).
Mariah Duran, a MTN DEW skateboarder and member of the U.S. national skateboarding team ,said that it's been one of the most exciting and interesting years in the history of skateboarding and the Olympics. She indicates that "From organizing the first U.S. skateboarding national team to becoming the first female skateboarder to join the surf team, this has been a really breakthrough year. I am eager to compete in the boarding event on the Long Beach and can’t wait to see how it all played out in the surf tour's first global Olympic qualifying event.”
The Olympic qualification system will be based on the world skateboard rankings developed by the world skating federation. Skateboarders can earn points by participating in competitions certified by the world skating federation during the Olympic qualification from January 1stto May 31st 2020. The surf tour, a 5-star street and bowl pool skateboarding event licensed by the world skating federation, will be the first qualifying event in the United States in 2019 and the last in the United States in 2020.Sabatino Aracu, President of the world skating federation, said: "our main goal has always been to ensure that the true soul of skateboarding is demonstrated and that the world's top skateboarders are selected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. We believe that working with the surf tour will help make the games a success. Vice President and general manager of mountain dew tour Adam Cozens reckons that no doubt this is a historic moment of skateboarding. “ We ushered in the first time that skateboarding became an Olympic sport, The Surf Tour is very honored to be responsible for the qualification," he says. "We have hosted world-class skateboarding development events and cultural celebrations, as well as Olympic qualifying events for other sports, so our goal is to show off the best men's and women's street and bowl style skateboarding while starting the Tokyo Olympics."
This year's event also includes the surf experience, a vibrant interactive sponsor village and green surf tour, an outdoor music festival, local food and beverage vendors, and activities which improve lifestyle and a public skate park. A variety of activities to integrate into the Long Beach community are also held on weekends through local non-profit partners. The surf tour will be open to the public freely. NBC and NBCSN will air six hours of coverage of The Surf Tour. DewTour.com, Facebook Live, YouTube and other mainstream platforms will also host the full broadcast for a total of 25 hours
